In the early 1960s, in a community of Shanghai refugees living in Hong Kong, Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung play characters married to other people who are renting rooms in apartments next door to each other. They meet, talk and eventually realize that their frequently traveling spouses are off having an affair with each other. They come to lean on each other, developing a complex emotional bond and that need is suffused with desire, which they are unsure how to act upon.
