Written, produced and directed by Wong Kar-wei, In the Mood for Love is probably the most breathtakingly gorgeous film of the year, dizzy with a romantic spirit that has been missing from the cinema forever. In the early 1960s, in a community of Shanghai refugees living in Hong Kong, Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung play characters married to other people who are renting rooms in apartments next door to each other. They meet, talk and eventually realize that their frequently traveling spouses are off having an affair with each other. They come to lean on each other, developing a complex emotional bond and that need is suffused with desire, which they are unsure how to act upon. This may be one of the swooniest movies ever made about love, and it luxuriates in its tailspin. (In Cantonese & Shanghainese with English subtitles). A USA Films release.
