Special Festival Screening in collaboration with Stony Brook University’s Pollock-Krasner House of East Hampton. Directed by and starring Ed Harris as Jackson Pollock. This powerful biographical film may be the first movie about a painter to transcend the gushy clichés found in movies that try to unravel the mysteries of artistic creation. There’s a portentous, enrapturing resonance in this intelligent depiction of the Abstract Expressionist’s meteoric rise and decline. Harris is riveting as Pollock and Marcia Gay Harden, who won an Oscar for her role as his wife, Lee Krasner, is brilliant. The tense domestic clashes between them are subtly staged and are electrifying. Besides its Action Painting sequences, the film’s biggest triumph is its richly shaded portrayal of the complicated Pollock-Krasner relationship. The pleasure of watching these two superb actors play figures of such stature without a trace of sentimentality is enormous.
