Twilight Samurai, nominated in 2004 for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, is directed and written by Yoji Yamada, the creator of the legendary Tora san series. Twilight Samurai combines two great genres of modern Japanese cinema. It is both an action Samurai film featuring an introspective warrior who displays honor and loyalty, and a family drama examining the tension between love, the restraint of tradition, and the rigidity of class. Seibei Iguchi, an ill-paid Samurai, receives the nickname “Mr. Twilight” because he rushes home to care for his two young daughters and his elderly mother rather than carousing with his peers. Set in the mid-19th century when the traditional Samurai were being replaced by modern technology, Twilight Samurai is an ode to a passing culture. Cowriters: Yoshitaka Asama (based on novels by Shuuhei Fujisawa) and Yoji Yamada. Produced by Hiroshi Fukazawa, Shigehiro Nakagawa and Ichiro Yamamoto. Cinematographer: Mutsuo Naganuma.
