Katie, a teenage girl from Malibu, California, finds herself in the throes of growing up, facing her parents, her boyfriends, her sexuality and a very privileged life. Half a world away in rural China, Lin faces a different reality. Because of a severe facial deformity, she lives a life of fear and shame. Smile is the beautiful and touching story of Katie and Lin and a life-changing experience.

Smile was inspired by the volunteer work of the filmmaker’s daughter with "Operation Smile," a charity founded by a plastic surgeon that provides free reconstructive surgery to citizens in developing nations. The film was shot in Shanghai and Kunshan/Jingxi, in Jiangsu Province, with special permission from the Chinese government. Produced by Kern and Kip Konwiser. Cinematographer: Edward J. Pei.
