An Evening with Alan Alda

Friday, July 28 at 7:30 pm Main Stage, Staller Center

The Stony Brook Film Festival is delighted to welcome the Stony Brook Southampton Writers Conference and an Evening with Alan Alda. Writers Conference faculty and participants will be in attendance for this special event, as long-time Conference participant Alda discusses his recent memoir, as well as his life as an actor, director and screenwriter.
Alan Alda starred for eleven years in the television series, M*A*S*H, for which he won 5 Emmy Awards. He wrote (or co-wrote) twenty episodes and he was the first person to win Emmy Awards for acting, writing, and directing for the same series. In addition to his Emmys, Alda has won the Writer's Guild Award twice and received the coveted Humanitas Award for writing the "Dreams" episode of M*A*S*H (from a story by Alda and James Jay Rubinfier). His memoir, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, was published by Random House in September, 2005.

Mr. Alda has earned international recognition as an actor, writer and director. His distinguished film career includes The Aviator, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Everyone Says I Love You, Same Time Next Year, California Suite, The Seduction of Joe Tynan (which he wrote), as well as The Four Seasons, Sweet Liberty, A New Life and Betsy’s Wedding (all of which he wrote and directed).

On Broadway, Mr. Alda has starred in numerous award-winning productions including Glengarry Glen Ross, QED, Jake’s Women, The Apple Tree, The Owl and the Pussycat, Purlie Victorious and Fair Game for Lovers. His illustrious and diverse television career as an actor, director and writer is highlighted by his current role as Arnold Vinick in The West Wing, the all-time classic Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H, host for long-running and award-winning Scientific American Frontiers on PBS, and many guest and recurring roles. His work on the small screen has earned him 31 Emmy nominations, 3 Director’s Guild awards, 6 Golden Globe awards, 7 People’s Choice Awards and in 1994 he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

One of the most versatile performers of his generation, Mr. Alda had the rarest of distinctions this past year as he was nominated for an Oscar (The Aviator), a Tony (Glengarry Glen Ross), an Emmy (The West Wing), as well as making The New York Times bestseller list!

The Stony Brook Southampton Writers Conference, an annual July event held at the Stony Brook Southampton Campus, features readings, lectures, and lively discussions with many distinguished authors, including E.
