Based on Bizet’s opera Carmen, the film is set
and filmed in the township of Khayelitsha in
Cape Town, South Africa and is a story of seduction,
love, jealousy and betrayal. U-Carmen
eKhayelitsha had its South African premiere in
Khayelitsha in March 2005 in the very same building in which the
last scene of the film is shot. The opera company, Dimpho Di
Kopane, started by Mark Dornford-May and Charles Hazlewood,
consists of forty South Africans whose stage production of Carmen
had phenomenal success and inspired the movie script. Written by
Mark Dornford-May, Andiswa Kedama, Pauline Malefane. Produced
