Dear Film Lovers,
It just keeps getting better and better! After celebrating 10 years in 2005 with an incredible lineup of
new films, we knew making 2006 even better would be our challenge. As ever, our goal is to bring
our community the finest, freshest and most exciting Independent films from around the world. We
have far exceeded our expectations by putting together our strongest slate of premiere screenings,
seminars and panels this year. And if that wasn’t enough, we have teamed up with Stony Brook
Southampton Writers Conference to bring Alan Alda to our Festival for a very special evening!
Once again my staff and I have assembled a series of the most intriguing, thought provoking,
and diverse new films, with many having their World, North American,
U.S. or East Coast premieres here at Stony Brook. Dozens of feature length and
short films from around the globe make this year’s Festival a truly international affair.
Working with The Suffolk County Film Commission, we have assembled a wonderful series
of three new films from Italy in a Celebration of New Italian Cinema. Stony Brook’s Center for
Wine, Food & Culture will help kick the celebration off with a tasting of Italian and Italian-American
wines and foods.
From a panel of experts discussing “Film Production and Distribution of Independent American and
Foreign Films” to a seminar by actor/ director John Putch (Pursuit of Happiness, Mojave Phone
Booth) on “Making an Anti-Hollywood Movie for Under $40 Grand,” to parties and receptions,
including our now famous Jasmine Supper Under The Stars (a fabulous Asian Buffet at the Charles B.
Wang Center), this year’s Festival is sure to stimulate, entertain and delight all of the senses!
Join us as we present both Independent features and shorts as they vie for your votes in competition
and search for distribution, along with Independent studio films premiering here before opening theatrically
this fall. In continuing to make our Festival accessible to all, we have kept the pass price at
an incredible $55, which includes all screenings over the 10-day festival, the Independent Film
Distribution Panel, the John Putch Seminar and An Evening with Alan Alda – all only available with
your Festival Pass purchase!
Come celebrate the best in foreign and Independent film and meet the directors, cast and crew of
many of these films. Mingle with them at parties and receptions, learn more about the industry and
have the time of your life at The 11th Annual Stony Brook Film Festival. As many of you have told us,
it wouldn’t be summer without it!
See you at the movies and the parties!
Alan Inkles, Festival Director
